I hear there a lot of myths about goldfish mating, so I’ll just lay them all to rest. The truth is that goldfish don’t have any mating rituals due to the fact that they are both hermaphrodites, meaning they are both male and female.
To reproduce, two goldfish will simply excrete their eggs or sperm into the water around them and continue swimming as if nothing happened. If you want your fish to help you get reproducing, and the water is warm enough for them to raise their young, then just let nature take its course.

What does “sperm” on a goldfish mean?
Sperm are the male sexual cells that will travel out of the testicles of a male goldfish and travel to the female. Goldfish can have as many as ten million sperm each time they reproduce!
Do goldfish get pregnant?
Yes. Goldfish that are both male and female will lay eggs. After the female has laid her eggs, the male will fertilize them with his sperm. When that happens, she will carry them until it is time for them to hatch. It is difficult to know when your goldfish’s eggs will be ready to hatch because there is no specific or uniform time for them to hatch.
Can you tell which fish is male and which one is female?
The easiest way to distinguish the male goldfish from the female goldfish is that males will usually have a wide body and females will usually have a flat body. Males can also have small spikes on top of their heads while the females tend not to have these spikes. If you are lucky, though, you could find fish that are both male and female and they can be recognized by their egg sacs (bunches of eggs).
If a goldfish is stressed, can he or she still reproduce?
They will still be able to reproduce, but their bodies will actually stop them from reproducing. When a goldfish is under stress, his or her body produces something called a “stress hormone.” This stress hormone makes them not want to reproduce and can actually prevent their bodies from reproducing.
Can you have more than two goldfish in your tank at one time?
Yes. But if you are having trouble keeping up with how fast your goldfish are reproducing, then it is best to move one of them to a smaller tank. Goldfish have a very high reproduction rate, and they can fill up an entire tank in just a few minutes.
How long will my fish last/stay alive?
Goldfish can live five to ten years if cared for properly. If you have a small goldfish tank that is less than five gallons, though, they can only live up to two years. The larger the tank the better care you will give them and the longer they will last.
Can a goldfish live in a bowl?
No. If you put them in an aquarium, they will die. Bowls are not the proper habitat for fish because they aren’t big enough for the fish to have room to thrive and reproduce. They are also usually made out of glass, which is not good for tropical fish like goldfish because it allows the water to get too hot. If your goldfish are in a bowl, you will need to take them out of it every day for them to get enough oxygen and water.
Does a goldfish make any sound?
Yes. Goldfish make little “chirps” or noises when they are eating or mating. Also, they sometimes “chirp” when they have just been fed and have not had time to digest their food. They also make these noises when they are enjoying the water.
Are there any unusual characteristics that goldfish have?
Yes. Goldfish have a lot of unusual characteristics, because they are very unique creatures. For example, when a human swims in the water they go about 0.5 miles per hour. When a goldfish swims in the water it goes about 2 miles per hour. In addition to that, their eyes have a “third eyelid” that can protect them from things entering their eyes when they are hurt or irritated. They also have a lateral line organ (a type of “ear” that helps them detect vibrations in the water).
Will my goldfish die because he has orange spots on his body?
No. Goldfish vary in color and are not the same color all over their bodies. Orange spots are not abnormal, and they will not lead to your goldfish’s death. If you have large orange spots on your goldfish, though, then it is possibly a sign of some type of disease. You should get it checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
How big do goldfish grow?
Goldfish can grow to be anywhere from one to six inches long! The largest recorded fish was one foot long and weighed over five pounds. They can even grow to be bigger though, if they are not happy in their tank. If you want them to grow, feed them a healthy diet and don’t put too many of them in your tank.
Are goldfish good pets?
Goldfish are great pets! They are relaxing to watch because they can just hang out in the water and will make you forget about all your stress.
